National Junior Honor Society

by Mrs. Short

When first quarter ends, our faculty begins the review process for potential candidates into the Georgetowne Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.  Students are considered for induction based on the following characteristics:

Students are initially considered as a possible candidate based on scholarship.  Students that have been on the honor roll for at least 8 of the last 9 grading periods will satisfy this initial scholarship requirement.  Once a list of candidates is formed from that criteria, the faculty is given a chance to provide input for potential candidates based on the other 4 criteria.  Our faculty council then deliberates on this input, and those chosen will be asked to give a speech to the faculty council.  Students chosen will select one of the five criteria listed above that they perceive as their strength and prepare a 2-3 minute speech about their chosen strength.  The faculty council will then deliberate once the speeches have ended and those chosen will be invited for induction into our chapter.  Since NJHS is quite an honor, simply the attainment of a good scholastic standing is not necessarily enough to gain induction into the society; students are evaluated on all of the 5 criteria listed.

Our induction ceremony this year will be held in December in the Georgetowne library.

NJHS has been involved in a number of projects through the years.  Here is a list of some of our service projects:

  • For several years, we raised money for Easter Seals through the "Coins for Kids" project and appeared on the Easter Seals telethon.
  • We have also undertaken beautification/cleanup projects on our school grounds, including purchasing a tree for the front of our school.
  • We sponsor a blood drive each year, usually in February.
  • We assist the 5th graders when they come to GMS for orientation.
  • We have sponsored "Random Acts of Kindness Week" and the activities associated with it.
  • We have sponsored "Autism Awareness" week and the activities associated with it.
  • We recognize honor roll students with locker tags.
