Watch for Bus Traffic as District #102 Starts Back to School!

August 18, 2018

As buses roll out for another school year, please be aware of the information shared by the Marquette Heights Police Department regarding bus safety. Most bus stops last less than 20 seconds before children board the bus and the bus begins moving again. Please be aware of buses and be prepared to stop when you see the flashing lights (yellow or red). A common problem our bus drivers face is motorists accelerating when they see flashing yellow lights so they can get past the bus before the flashing red lights turn on and the stop arm is activated. This causes a safety issue for students who may be running late to the bus stop and are hurrying to cross a street to catch the bus.

Also, if your child is a bus rider, please understand that the times posted for bus pickup are approximate times. We ask that you have your children read at their bus stops at least five minutes prior to the scheduled time. Please also understand that on the the first day of school, we typically face many delays. This is an exciting time for students/parents and it's tough for a parent to pass up a photo opportunity when a child is boarding the bus. There is also construction on Route 29 which seems to have traffic backed up on a daily basis, forcing some of our routes to use alternative streets to avoid longer delays. These situations will likely cause delays in the morning routes.

Let's have a safe year!
